Just imagine returning to your beautiful winter home only to find your floors are covered in two inches of water or your personal property damaged beyond repair.
Did you know that water damage claims are the most frequently filed homeowner insurance claims?
What steps can you take to prevent and minimize damage to your beautiful home?

  1. Know how to shut off your water main
  2. Take time to learn how to shut off your main water source to your home now, not when the unexpected occurs.

  3. Check hoses frequently
  4. You rely on variety of hoses to supply water to your home. At least twice year, carefully inspect all hoses; dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, and water heater.

  5. When away for extended period of time:
  6. Turn off the washing machine valve
Turn off the water supply line to the toilet
Drain all lines, if possible and do not close or plug drain lines

  7. Install a water alarm
  8. We use smoke alarms to keep us safe, we can do the same with a water protection alarm. They are inexpensive and easy to install in area of high probability of leaks. Such as water heater closets and laundry rooms. One possible product is: Moen Water Protection Alarm Link

Another option

..have the caretaker inspect home within 24 hours of the weather event.

Hire a property caretaker. Instruct them to:

  1. Inspect and check the home thoroughly once a month
  2. Use a flashlight to check under all sinks, laundry rooms and water heater closets.
  3. In the event of a local storm, have the caretaker inspect home within 24 hours of the weather event.
  4. Be sure your property caretaker also has your agent’s contact information.

In addition

Before leaving for the summer be sure you have your agent's contact information and the phone numbers for two (2) licensed and bonded contractors.
In the event you find a need for a water mitigation company, Standard Casualty Company has selected ServiceMaster Restore as a preferred vendor for water damage restoration. Service Master is available 24/7 at (855) 646-8988
